My Diary and Personal Thoughts

What is in a name, Fermare?

Hey there!:) So you’re probably thinking to yourself: “….hmm, how do I pronounce Fermare,…also what does Fermare mean?”. That’s a great question, and I’m really excited to tell you more about Fermare and how I came up with the name:P

What is in a Name.

My name is Warrick Kin, and I’m the head couturier and founder of Fermare by Warrick Kin.

Fermare
Verb

/fer’mare/ (pronounced like how a ‘furry’ + ‘Marie’ biscuit would be pronounced haha….except instead of ‘ee’ at the end of Marie you say ‘eh’:))

*side note: a furry Marie biscuit would taste pretty weird:p

to stay, to stop, to hold

Coming up with a name for my label was quite a task if you can imagine, but at the end, after going through all my lists of names – Fermare was the one that stuck with me:)

The naming of my label has its roots in one of my favourite things in this world, besides fashion, that is from music. To say music is wonderful and extraordinary and beautiful, would be un understatement – I really can’t imagine a world without it!

When I was young I studied music, and one of my favourite musical notations was the Fermata. A Fermata in music is a pause or a sustaining of a musical note longer than the actual time allotted for that note. The pause is so beautiful, it gives breath to the music. I wish I could share the beauty of a Fermata with you, maybe one day:)

Fermare is the root word of the Fermata, and is Italian for, to stay or to stop. It’s such an appropriate word, because it invokes all that I want the label to be. I wish to create beautiful garments that speaks to what it means to pause, to stop for a little while and enjoy the time you have now.

I wish for the label to be a gesture, a musical annotation, for us to live a slower life full of intent; a move away from simply consuming fashion and life, and towards enjoying it all more fully, the way we should. Fermare is a gesture, it is slow fashion in the best sense; slow fashion where we know and appreciate the true value of a garment, and learn to treasure what we have – as we did when we were children.

I love the notion that life is like music…as with music life has its rhythms, fast and slow, and loud and soft…but my favourites are the little times of pause, those moments we pause to sit down with ones we love, or the moments just before the sun sets beyond the horizon. For life is a precious gift, and skipping past little moments of joy just takes away from it.

Live life more slowly and thoughtfully…stop and celebrate and delight in today, in family and in friends. Remember, the day of rest was made for man and not man for it.

Yours truly
